I used to live in front of Pete’s New Haven pizza in Virginia. It was good, but I remember thinking it was overpriced, and I just couldn’t understand the hype of New Haven pizza.
When I came to New Haven for a Yale SOM interview in 2018, I wanted to check out a real New Haven pizza joint. The locals unanimously suggested Frank Pepe although there were other strong contenders (Sally’s, Modern, and Bar). My friend Allen and I stood in line at Frank Pepe with high expectations. When we were finally seated after about 15 minutes, we asked the waitress for her recommendations. She recommended the white clam pizza and a custom Neapolitan pizza with Italian sausage, roasted red peppers, and spinach.
I discovered my favorite pizza joint. The pizzas came out piping hot. The white clam pizza was unique, but my favorite was the custom pizza. The tomatoes had the perfect flavor, the crusts had a slight char and crisp, and the roasted red peppers really enhanced the taste. Allen, on the other hand, appreciated the good pizza but was not a huge fan of Neapolitan pizzas.
